One easy way to guide your brain towards the things you want is to write down your goals on a paper. They must be in their present form (the verb is in the present). There must be a time target. The goal should be concrete. The goal should start with the word “I”. For example, I am CEO in 31st of December 2020. Of course, targets must be challenging, but realistic.
For example, I make $ 100,000 / month on December 31st, 2020. If now (in 2019) I earn $ 3,000 / month, it would not be realistic to target for $ 100,000 / month. At the moment, you probably don’t believe it. Of course, you have to dare to dream, and that is why I cannot say that you shouldn’t by no means put it as your goal. If you can believe it, put it there. It’s not about what others believe is realistic – you have to believe it.
If you want a realistic goal, then probably $ 30,000 / month could be it for you. Then by starting from the end towards the present, it could be that in year 2026 you would earn $ 30,000 / month. That would mean $ 25,000 in year 2025 and $ 20,000 in year 2024. Then it could be $ 15,000 in year 2023 and $ 10,000 in year 2022. This could then mean $ 7,500 in year 2021 and $ 5,000 in year 2020. Yes, that’s realistic for someone out there. Still I would better believe, that I could make $ 10,000 a month in year 2025. That means that in year 2024 I could earn $ 8,000 and in year 2023 it would be $ 6,000. That could be $ 5,000 in year 2022, $ 4,000 in year 2021 and $ 3,500 in year 2020. Now it looks better and still the income would be more than tripled. All you have to do, is you have to do something about this. Unfortunately, not all goals are met for different reasons. The fact is that goals will make you know, in which direction you want to go. You should never be saying that you will never achieve these goals, because then you will never achieve them. Another thing to remeber is not to get too caught up with your goals. Don’t think about those goals every day or try to see you succeed in them too often. Let them be your stars to follow and do a lot of actions in order to achieve them. Enjoy your journey toward the goals and be happy even if you didn’t acheve them!
Make goals for different areas of your life. Up to 10 goals in total. Think about different areas as work, family, economy, health, hobbies, etc. Write them down and go through them 30 nights in a row before you go asleep. You can think of them as pictures and make them into colorful movies where you feel like you already have them. Then you let them be in the background and you work towards them – you keep them in the background all the time, but you still know them. Then the goals are like a destination and you fly towards it, correcting your course whenever it is needed towards your goal. I have had such goals – when I was 30 years old, I decided that at the age of 35 I’m Business Controller, at the age of 45 I’m the CFO and 55 years of age I’m the Managing Director. In fact, all of these have come true. However, this role of the CEO is just the CEO of my own company – though I did not define it anyway, so that too has come true. At the same time I haven’t been thinking on them. They have been in the background and I have watched me going toward these goals and if needed corrected my way toward my destination.
I want to lasso the moon (from the movie: “It’s a wonderful life”) – be realistic and get what you want!
